Captain Cruises Into Shanghai Final
Ali Carter came from 2-0 down to beat Mark Selby 6-2 and set up a final meeting with Jamie Burnett in the Roewe Shanghai Masters.
Tiptree's Carter has been the highest seeded player in the event, at No 3, since Neil Robertson fell in the first round, and lived up to his billing with a fine display of break-building and safety play against pre-tournament favourite Selby.
The player nicknamed the Captain is through to his fourth ranking final and will have the chance to take his second title - after the 2009 Welsh Open - when he faces Scotland's Burnett over 19 frames at the Grand Stage.
Leicester's Selby started strongly, taking the first two frames with a top break of 82. He had chances to go 3-0 up but ran out of position on the yellow at 50-56 then later missed a long pot, allowing Carter to clear from yellow to pink.
Pokerstars.com Masters champion Selby led 35-12 in frame four when he missed a red to a top corner. Carter's chances of winning the frame in one visit did not look promising, with several reds close to cushions, but he picked them off in a flawlessly-crafted 69.
The Essex player went ahead for the first time with a superb 129 and nicked frame six by clearing from last red to black for 4-2. A run of 99 saw him within one of victory and he dominated frame eight, winning it 80-0, to move a step closer to the £60,000 top prize.
"From 2-0 down I did very little wrong," said the 31-year-old. "I made a great clearance to go 2-2 and that gave me a lift going into the interval. After that I made good breaks, played solid safety and didn't give Mark many chances.
"It's very pleasing to get through to the final. I've never played Jamie before but I just want to enjoy the day tomorrow and try to play well, and take whatever result comes."
Selby said: "I had chances to go 3-0 and if I'd done that it would have been a different game. After that every time I made a mistake he punished me heavily."
